The Yorkshire Imperial Band is proud to be led by the incredibly experienced Ian McElligott, whose reputation as a conductor and arranger is recognised across the brass band world.

Ian brings a wealth of experience from decades of working with bands at the highest level. His musicianship, attention to detail, and ability to inspire players of all abilities make him a natural fit for the Imps.

Under Ian's direction, the band achieved a strong 8th place finish at the 2025 Yorkshire Area Championships in the Championship Section with Diversions for Brass Band — the band's highest result in the top section in over a decade.

The Yorkshire Imperial Band has been shaped by some of the finest conductors in the brass band movement. From the early days under the guidance of legendary bandmasters, through the golden era with Trevor Walmsley and Denis Carr, to the modern era with Musical Directors including Stig Maersk, Steve Walsh, Martin Heartfield, and David Hamilton, the band has always attracted top-class musical leadership.

Ian McElligott continues this proud tradition, guiding the band as it competes in the Championship Section and performs at prestigious venues across the country.
